Hyper Rift app for Apple iOS and Android is an engrossing text based game that reminds me of the old DOS classic Zork, only with modern visuals and way more intrigue. Figure out who you are, where you are and what’s what, cuz your gut tells you it ain’t nothing good. This one is cerebral and immersive. (continued)
Hyper Rift app is a text based RPG that presents in portrait mode, from an aerial point of view looking down on what appears to be a blueprint view of a spaceship. The screen is divided in two, with the top half showing the blueprint and the bottom half displaying text. As the story goes, you awaken from cryogenic sleep to discover you have no idea who you are, where you are or what’s what, but your Spidey senses are tingling, and you know none of it amounts to anything good. You get up to explore your surroundings, which is accomplished by reading text and navigating the spaceship’s blueprint. Tap arrows to move to different rooms, tap magnified glass to examine things more closely and try to figure out what the heck is going on anyways. You appear to be the only one here, yet your gut keeps gnawing at you and telling you different.
The controls use screen taps and slides to deliver the
goods, and functioned as expected. The graphics have pleasing neon hues that
imbue the game with a futuristic yet retro feel, coming off like one of those
semi-transparent computer monitors you often see in cool sci-fi flicks. The
animation renders basic blueprint movement as you traverse from room to room;
very minimal, but engaging. The sounds are minimalist, rightly keeping focus on
the text based play.
Hyper Rift app for Apple iOS and Android is a heady game of
imagination and discovery that’s sure to entertain diehard RPG fans, clear
through to the end. There’s a lot to do and see here, and I really loved the
quality presentation and retro play. This one’s cool.
